The story of Sarah
by Foster, Mary Louise, 1873-1910

this is a kind of romeo and juliet story, but set between two villages in the united states. one of those villages is vonstradam, populated almost entirely by dutch immigrants to the united states and their children. the neighboring village is already american. the benstra family is one of those dutch families in vonstradam, and bennie is their youngest son. but bennie is grown up now, and has met sarah jarvis, daughter of captain lem jarvis, with whom his father has some trouble these past ten years.

the story is remarkable for its account of integration and how a second generation is adapted to the united states where their parents arent. might be interesting and relevant also today.
