The Tragedy of a Throne
by Radziwill, Catherine, Princess, 1858-1941

i wrote in the other thread a summary of who ludwig was:
king ludwig ii is in the first place mostly remembered for building a number of castles, among which neuschwanstein castle and for being declared insane and then dying a mysterious death. but being the Fairy Tale King of the amazing castles and then romantically and mysteriously dying brought him a lasting place in culture. hes an interesting figure if you like to read up on it.
and this book also concerns that same king (lasting place in culture thats what i said), but this time non fiction rather than a novel. this account and judgment of ludwig is coloured by the fact that this book was published in 1916, and the author is somehow convinced that had the three southern states not joined unified germany but had stayed independent, ww1 might not have happened (or at least not in such magnitude). ludwig was sovereign of bavaria when that state became a part of the new german empire in 1871.
