Enid Blyton published a book of children's poems in 1922 called "Child Whispers". I think this would probably be the only book of hers which is now PD, as everything else (as far as I can see) was published in 1923 or later.

If anyone can find an online source (I haven't been able to) this would be a lovely little project! There are a couple of first edition copies for sale, but they are asking over 1,000USD!

I've found Enid Blyton's Holiday Book https://openlibrary.org/works/OL1949695W/The_Enid_Blyton_Holiday_Book

I don't know where you live, but here is a list of libraries holding the edition you're looking for: http://www.worldcat.org/title/child-whispers/oclc/460122440&referer=brief_results

Thanks Kim! I'll have a look at the Holiday book, as unfortunately none of those libraries are in my hemisphere!

I note that this book has both a paperback 1922 edition and a hardcover 1923 edition. For LV purposes, I need an online source for the 1922 version (first edition) only - is that right? Or would the hardcover version be OK as well? Same text, and the hardcover version is obviously easier to find 90 years later!

Is that openlibrary/Archive link able to be used to record here? The book is also listen on Amazon as a "pre-1923" book. It appears to be safe, but this scanned copy doesn't actually have a date on it, though all the pages appear to be scanned. Admin opinion please? I'd like to launch it as a group project, if possible.

Based on the children's clothes the illustrations are post 1922 to my mind. Certainly not 1900 . , more 1930-40 I would say. So on what I can see I wouldn't allow it.
The 1900 date would mean she was 3years old even 1923 seems a bit early for her to be famous enough for some one to decide to publish a "Holiday Book" to give the kiddies at Christmas - in my opinion the date is patently wrong.

As to the original question re soft and hard cover verse. It's hard to prove the hard cover one is exactly the same. And if it isn't I'm sure the Blyton copyright holders would descend on us - she didn't die till about 1968 so she is not PD in death plus countries.

If there was a US library with a copy of the 1922 publication and if someone lived nearby and if the library allowed it to be photographed you might get a copy.

I suspect British libraries would not as it would not be PD for them.
Without some sort of scan PG is unlikely to investigate whether it was renewed
So I can't see a way you could do it.

A bit of further digging places the Holiday Book as a 1946 first publication. :(

So it's back to the poetry idea!

I would think the first think Beth would need to do is contact the library - there's an address om the world cat page and explain what she would like , see what their response is using much tact.

Any update on whether "Child Whispers" can be recorded? If so, I sure would love to record something by one of my favorite
authors as a child! :9:

Do let me know. Thanks!

I haven't been able to find a library with it and I can't afford a first edition, so at the moment this project is off the table. I think it could only go ahead if someone could find and scan a first edition.

Library editions are held in Texas, Dublin, London and Oxford, so nothing within the same continent for me! :(

Enid Blyton died in 1968 so it would only be PD for US based readers until 2019 for life+50 countries.
The British Library if I remember correctly does scan manuscripts on request, but I cannot see them scanning something that is not PD in the UK (2039).
Place a request in the Help Wanted forum - we must have a reader or 2 in Texas ... We definitely have in London, Edinburgh and Dublin!!
Also, reprints are fair game (i.e. PD) as long as they have not altered the text etc. substantially. If you're concerned about a reprint, run it through the copyright vetting process at PG.
Anon.
