I have failed to find an audio copy of this novel on any site, so wonder if one exists. It is a wonderful novel and is mentioned by George Orwell amongst others as one of the big influences on him as a young man. It was written on the very eve of WW1 and communicates the spirit of its time. In its day it gave rise to several spin off novels. I am wondering if there are others out there who would also recommend this title and - even better - readers who would be interested in making a copy.

Author died in 1972, so it's not PD for those in Europe, Canada, or Australia. It would have to be someone (or various people) in the USA to record it.

I don't think Librivox has recorded any of the early novels of Compton Mackenzie:

"Sinister Street" was famous in its day:

Here is Gutenberg's Compton Mackenzie page (for any interested readers):

As he died in 1972 I guess that would be US readers only?
Best,

Sylvia Scarlett's on my backburner, but it's a whopper and would take several months to record. Sinister Street might be more doable for the average soloist. Maybe Karen Savage could record this; she's an ex-pat Brit in the States.

I'm glad I did a search and found that the subject of the earlier works of Compton MacKenzie has already been discussed! There are quite a few which might be in the public domain:

Nan (who really wants to read Monarch of the Glen, but that won't be in the public domain for AGES.)
