Famous unrecorded horror, ghost and weird tales:These stories vary in length (short, novella, novel) and are stories that are regarded as popular/exceptional examples of the genre (Lovecraft recommendations, anthologies, genre reference guides, internet "Best of" lists, fan favorites, etc.) I will update the list and remove stories as they get recorded and and include new stories when I locate them. If anyone has an unrecorded story that they don't see on the list and wants to include it post it to the thread and I will add it (provided that if falls within the definition of the said genre.)

Great idea
You may be better to ask people to post ideas in the thread though rather than PM - then people will know about additions to the list and if there are PD problems will be able to offer views.

An excellent idea, and the list looks great!

I recently posted 'The Man-Wolf' in the Book Suggestions thread, which was, if Wikipedia is to be believed, admired by M. R. James and H. P. Lovecraft. It would be too long for the Short Ghost and Horror Collection, but might make a spooky stand-alone book.

It's definitely too long for a short collection, but would you consider Hogg's The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2276) to fit the bill?

Happy (early) Halloween!

Happy Halloween to you to Erin! I would love to see "Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner" get recorded (awesome book reminiscent of/influential to Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde.) Added to the list, thank you.

Tales of the Wonder Club

Published in three volumes.

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/33688
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/34817
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/36731

You included the name of one story out of Volume I, but there's a lot more there than just the one story.

I got a message about City of Dreadful Night that was deleted before it arrived. Just to say, I looked at the poem (I remember it from an anthology called Sick Verse about the experience of being longtime ill) but for a reading aloud it has a lot of foreign language at the start so I left it on one side and did The Ballad of Reading Gaol for the Long Poem selection instead. I am thinking of one or two other things; I would definitely do Cecilia de Noel (l'm now halfway through my first solo which is Northanger Abbey) but according to the catalogue it was done on Librivox recently and I'd rather not repeat for a couple of years. Thanks for your interest (whatever the message was about).

We actually do have Cecilia de Noel in our catalog, a relatively recent addition:
http://librivox.org/cecilia-de-noel-by-mary-elizabeth-hawker/

It may be useful for potential readers if you divide your list by lenght:
- short stories (for a collection, less thatn 8000 words)
- novellas (short solo, maybe around 5 hours or less)
- novels (all the rest).

People might be interested in a short story but not in a novel or the other way around, and this way you'd make it easier for them to find something.
Cheers, Ava.

Hi Ava, Thanks for letting me know about "Cecilia de Noel" I took it off the list. That's a good idea about putting the titles in sections according to their length :)

(Adonis)

In my opinion, this is one of the most outstanding poems of the 19th century. Its portrayal of urban alienation and post-Darwinian religious despair mark it out as a key work of its time. The poet was not merely 'sick' - he was registering a complex of feelings which carried over into the 20th century. He was depicting the Waste Land decades before Eliot.

There's nothing mere about being sick. It's the key experience of a lifetime if it lasts long enough. Obviously the compiler of that classic anthology was looking for a title that would both disarm criticism and describe the book. I haven't looked into his experience of (ill) health but I was looking to plunder it for part of a storytelling set that would describe M. E. - at least to me. This quaint song by someone who had it for seven years partly does:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rgb8am3NQU0

When I looked at The City of Dreadful Night I genuinely thought: Well, I've done The Ballad of Reading Gaol and I know a man on Death Row in Ohio and I've dedicated it to him, I've done The Ancient Mariner and I know all those psychic states, I could do The Wasteland, but he's pretty prissy about people and then there's The City of Dreadful Night - and I decided to do the Rudyard Kipling story of the same name instead. And now someone else has done it and all's well.

Sincerely,
Tony Addison.

and frequently leads to spiritual exaltation and artistic creation as well as misery and despair (and frank dullness).

A pleasant guy on a poetry site here asked where I got the emotional timbre of my voice from and I told him; when you've been twenty years ill and more you turn into the finest compost.

p. s. At least in my opinion (All's Well That Ends Well, Act Four Scene Three Line one hundred and twenty seven). That stuff at the end of my last (above) is a dead giveaway; that was meant to be deleted. O well.

p. p. s. I made that line reference up.
