By original do you mean the Danish version or the translation ? This is for my information as I always thought the translation had to be published 1922 or earlier ? And it does say this translation was made pre WWI but not published till 1923

I think the "A University of Texas Bulletin" didn't put a copyright statement on the work. At least I didn't find one when I did a quick look. The someone who is going to file the clearance needs to verify that by looking at every page of the scaned work. That allows us to clear the translation under Rule 5 as long as we can show the translator to be a U.S. Citizen. The obituary that Ruth found looks good for that. The obituary link will need to be in the clearance comments along with a summary of birth date and location and death date.

The other piece that has to be proven is the public domain status of the original work. We need to show that it was first published in 1922 or earlier. Scans of title page and versos from books with earlier publication dates are one way. The statement in the introduction will help, but unless it says what the source material is and when it was published, the statement that the translation happened earlier doesn't prove that the translation was from published documents. I don't know Danish to be able to tie the translations to the earlier works. If we use title page and versos from Danish language books we have to provide an English language translation to PG. I'd prefer to find an English reference work that lists when the original Danish language publication was made.

Now that works from 1923 and 1924 have entered the public domain, either source would be fine. When this discussion first began, of course, that wasn't the case. (And Gutenberg didn't add this text until last year, anyway.) Most readers would probably find the Gutenberg text easier to deal with, so it's a good find.
