I would like to do Red Fox, by Charles G. D. Roberts. I am not 100% sure it's in the public domain, and would like assistance in checking this. It was published in 1905 and other works of his are on Librivox, so it seems there's a good chance it is in the public domain.

It's one of my favourite books, an extremely absorbing account of the life of a fox family from their perspective. It's the type of book that would be enjoyed by young and old.

If published in 1905, it's PD in its original form. Someone along the way may have edited it and slapped a new copyright on it, so watch out for that.

Here's a clearly PD version on Archive.org: http://archive.org/details/cu31924024785010

(You'd have to read from the scan or PDF; the texts at Archive aren't proofread, but are straight from the scan and full of errors.)

You'll want to do the one-minute test before recording, and possibly record a section or two in a group project, so that you can get a feel for what you're getting yourself into before biting off a whole book on your own. ;)

Welcome!

I wasn't sure, since it is a Canadian book. Thanks for clarifying that.

Yep!

And if you're in Canada, the rule for YOU (so you're not breaking Canadian law) is that it's PD in the 51st year after the author's death. He apparently died in 1943, so he's clearly PD in Canada as well. :)

This book is also available from Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/46005

There are quite a few works by Roberts on PG that have not yet been recorded, check them out here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/2272?sort_order=title
Looks like he was a prolific author of animal stories, fiction and non-fiction, for young readers and adults, and wrote a fair amount of poetry as well.

Works already recorded at Librivox: https://librivox.org/author/364
