Not sure where this should fit in the forums --

The Library of Congress has started a list of Books That Shaped America http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/books-that-shaped-america/

I am appending the Library's blurb and the present list of books arranged by date of publication. Of the 88 books listed, 40 are in public domain, published before 1923 (45%). Of these, Librivox has versions of 24 (60%), which leaves 16 with no Librivox versions (40%). Maybe these 16 would be good candidates for recording? Anyone interested? Alas, time constraints keep me from leaping forward. In the list below, I've italicized those 16 without Librivox versions.

Books That Shaped America
The Library of Congress, the world’s largest repository of knowledge and information, began a multiyear “Celebration of the Book” with an exhibition on “Books That Shaped America.” The initial books in the exhibition are displayed below.

“This list is a starting point,” said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. “It is not a register of the ‘best’ American books – although many of them fit that description. Rather, the list is intended to spark a national conversation on books written by Americans that have influenced our lives, whether they appear on this initial list or not.”

We hope you will view the list, nominate other titles, and most importantly, choose to read and discuss some of the books on this list, reflecting America’s unique and extraordinary literary heritage, which the Library of Congress makes available to the world.

Give your input by completing the online survey.

Hi David,

the copyright cutoff is "published BEFORE 1923". I took the liberty to edit your list accordingly. It would be nice to amend the list with links to online versions at least of the books we don't have yet.

Of course, for me, I'd be mostly interested in the very first book. However, 1751 - I really wonder how easy/difficult it would be to read.

We do have a book on the Lewis and Clark Expedition (I bc'ed that), but it's not the one you have here.
Cheers, Ava.

Hi Ava, Thanks for the editing. I've put in the locations of the books I could find. Maybe others can find the ones I couldn't?
Peace, David

Well BT, those lists always depend on the people who make them...

On a related note, I have found the first book on the list - it's on gutenberg! In French...
So, no help from me on this one at this time, I'm afraid... :(
Cheers, Ava.
