I'm proposing this as more of a project than one actual book called World Encyclopedia. This would be an international group project wherein we would each read as much PD material as we can (or want) on where we each live. I would read about Florida, other folks who live in other states read about their states, and folks in other countries: Ireland, Israel, Germany, Belgium, Australia, Japan, et al read about their part of the world.
Concentrate on non-fiction works, preferably in English, or record articles in both English and your native language. In my case, I have tour guides from the late 19th Century, a book of letters by H B Stowe from her winter home in North FL, a collection called A Sketch Book of Florida from the same period, a book on Seminole Indians, periodical articles, etc
Sources: non-copyrighted works from Archive.org and Project Gutenberg.
Add excerpts from fiction books & poetry to add flavor to the collection.
Is this doable?

Okay, then how about if we concentrated on one part of the States, like the South? Jefferson at Monticello, Louisiana Purchase, Civil War coverage, excerpts from key novels, travelogues, slave narratives, etc

The original idea sounds good to me - it's nice to hear what people identify with the place they live. It's something I'd possibly participate in.
Or you could concentrate on one area, pick several pieces about it and get readers to sign up for those. But I think this is an area where you want authentic accents, so having people talk about where they come from or live will get you a wider pool.

So little space, so much to say.
