JAMES WILSON BRIGHT (1852–1926)

The Elements Of English Versification (1910) · With Raymond Durbin Miller (1875–????)

ℹ️ "A work to reveal to the student who would put his thoughts into some poetic form that there are certain rules that must govern versification in order that it may be attractive and forceful. The authors treat with all fairness and fullness such matters as rhythm, melody, harmony, meters, scansion, and many others that are invaluable to the would-be poet to know, and to know well. And numbers of brief examples from famous poems are interspersed throughout the text to illustrate the principles that must be followed to make the verse effective. Some complete poems are also given to indicate the difference between a sonnet and an ode, the rondel and the ballad, etc. The ground covered by the authors is quite extensive, and their suggestions strike one as decidedly helpful." (The Journal Of Education, 02/06/1910)

ℹ️ "As a whole, this text-book will be a very great aid to those who believe that the history of literature should involve an understanding of the "underlying technicalities of the more external side of poetry". The cleverness and the truth of the book, and its clearness and fullness, in dealing with this difficult and too often neglected side of poetry, entitle it to a most hearty welcome from those who wish to teach facts rather than theory". (Benjamin P. Kurtz, Modern Language Notes, 11/1910)
