"Spurs" is the title of a famous horror story published in Munsey Magazine in 1923. It was the basis for the controversial film Freaks (Tod Browning). Robbins died in 1949 and enters public domain in Europe and the US at new year. (I think)
My suggestion is to leave this here and see if the story turns up at gutenberg etc. The owner of Pulp magazine copyrights is Steeger properties. You could email them and ask what happens at new year.

Yes, it might be. It was first published in February 1923, then later collected in other books. You know this better than me. There is already a reading of this at youtube.

The online text linked is from the 1928 book, so it's still under copyright. One would have to find a scan of the original magazine article.

I didn't look at the Archive PDF. I assume it's someone's typed text, which we couldn't use because we don't have the original source info.

We're careful about copyright.

In the US, it's currently the January 1, 95 years after publication, so something published anytime in 1928 would be PD in the US on Jan 1, 2024.

There's a copy of the original at HathiTrust:

The short story Spurs is in Munsey's Magazine, Vol. 78: Feb.-May 1923, beginning on page 24 and runs 9 pages, double column, at:

The publication information is on page 1 (page scan #5)

I hope this helps,

Thanks, Don! Someone could use that source and include this in the short horror/ghost story collection. 8-)

If you like Tod Tobbins, there is a complete collection of his early stories here. I am not sure what genre they are, though.

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=hvd.hxdmea&view=1up&seq=7

The collection is entitled

"Silent, white and beautiful : and other stories" 1920

Includes:
"Silent, White and Beautiful"
"Who Wants a Green Bottle?"
"Wild Wullie, the Waster"
"For Art's Sake" (revised version of Mysterious Martin)
