I was surprised how scientifically knowledgeable Doane was. He and his troopers were sent as security for the expedition. His ability to describe what he saw with some intelligence was a bonus.

I was wondering about Doane's surgery, splitting the bone. Maybe lanced to the bone, but splitting it sounded a bit extreme.
