but this way the reader gets to suffer the same sense of frustration as the master and Mistress by listening to "Master, to the Parlourmaid" "Parlourmaid, to the Master" "Mistress, to the Cook" "Cook to the Mistress" etc etc over and over again.... Reminds me...

Actually, it wasn't lawyers, but notaries, which I see as rather fastidious -- hence more like butlers than lawyers. (Although the notary in Monte Cristo was quite lawyerly)
