Re: SOLO The Life of Florence Nightingale by Sarah Tooley - dc

It's fun to dream about, though... :D CH. 4 is ready for a listen. I am continuing to find this book a pleasant read., You know, I do think that this era of writers (turn of the 20th century) tends to portray childhood in a kind of cloying and simpering way, but then again, most current movies and s...

Yes, I read about that too. It will be so interesting to see it it is indeed the plane. The photos look questionable, with the swept back wings. But that might be a result of the crash, I guess. There is a lot of discussion around it. There's that one guy who claims to have proven that she was alive...

Re: SOLO An Old Master and Other Political Essays, by Woodrow Wilson - dc

And yet, despite how much I agree with many of these ideas, I am troubled by the fact that underlying them seems to be (in Wilson's case, I mean), a belief in a superior breed of people - an Anglo Saxon high caste, so to speak. I find I am disappointed in him, in a way. I also continue to think that...

True, but I don't think a reasonably cautious person would have even attempted these kinds of flights back in those days. I have not an ounce of dare devil blood in me, so I just want to go back in time and tell her to knock it off.

Okay , chapter 4 of 5 is up. Lots of it is cringy, at least to me. I tend to think that if one knows lots of big words and can put them together impressively, one can write a lot of bs-ery and still sound like quite the sage (which got young Ciufi safely through many Blue Book exams).

Re: SOLO Tragedy in Dedham: The Sacco-Vanzetti Case, by Francis Russell - brrot

Thank you! Section 14 is up. Seems like both men had pretty solid alibis for the day of the crime, honestly. Here's a weird thing. In glancing over the next chapter, I see that the text has suddenly changed the names of the McAnarney brothers to McAnamey. I went back and checked, and it has definite...

Chapter 3 is up. My opinion of Wilson's writing style has not changed, though I find this chapter much more interesting. And I strongly suspect that it was a little prissy even in 1904 to use the word "peradventure" instead of perhaps or maybe. :)
