Re: People who have been asked to change their accent

Google tells me that the most stubborn county is Yorkshire. :?: :?: I think this could just possibly be right. If you have ever watched "Heartbeat" - a drama series on British TV, which is set in Yorkshire, you will see this stubbornness a lot. But I'm not sure it's really true and it's p...

Re: Your LOW tech secrets

I have moved my microphone off my desk. My cunning plan, my noble aspiration, was to avoid recording my mouse clicks. My current high tech solution is: - Blue Snowball Ice microphone on its tripod stand. - The Stand is on a stool. - Two thick books are on the stand below microphone. Then my high te...

Re: ZOOM Discussion Thread

I enjoyed watching the evening edition of the February Zoom chat. I left a comment there. I was glad to hear discussion on the length of the disclaimer and want to make a suggestion. I'm not sure where to put it, so I'll start here. First, it breaks all the rules of refined English to say the same ...

Re: Bored? How about a microphone shootout?

I've used an older version of the AKG 414 mic and found it phenomenal. If I had a couple thousand dollars sitting around I'd happily buy a pair. The current ones are even quieter than those of 20 years ago. Yes, the C414 XLS has an A weighted self noise of only 6dB and I think that's also on the om...

Re: Help with background noise?

Well it has a lot of sibilance. It's not long enough to hear what the background sounds like. What mic are you using and how close to it are you? Can you upload a few seconds (about 10) of silence and then speak for about 20 seconds and say how close you are to the mic.

Re: Bored? How about a microphone shootout?

I have several mics I use for narration. Best mic: Royer R101 ribbon mic used with back rather than front gives the best results on my voice. Second best mic: AKG C414 XLS condenser with various polar patterns. I use on hyper-cardioid and this works very well Third best mic: DPA 2006C omni mic - gre...

Re: Short Story Collection 101 - lt

The Prisoner's Defense ~8:29-8:34 it sounds like there is interference from another track. and again ~9:46-? I only listened til 10:35 Sorry, I will have to look into that. I made the recording some time ago and it may have been my fault for using two mics and mixing down to mono. I do experiment t...

Re: Learning The History Of Librivox

Actually in the mid 1970's I edited audiobooks read for the blind by well known actors/actresses provided on cassette. I copied these to reel to reel tape and edited, then copied back to cassette. This cassette was then copied back at HQ and sent out to blind listeners. It was hard work!

Re: Making your reading sound Great

Here is a great article by Stephen Jay Cohen on proper mic positioning . Yes, it's a good article. However, depending on the mic being used, 12 inches is not too far -especially in a treated or semi treated room. I record at 12 inches now - my room is very dead at less than 0.5 sec reverb. I have a...
