I can't find it online, but some years ago I remember seeing a map that overlaid the modern Manhattan streets on a historic map of the streams and lakes. It made news because, apparently, the basements and basement apartments located on the stream sites were still prone to flooding. Imagine that.

The key, I think, is to have a clean start when you come to re-read the bit you got wrong. Don't be in the middle of sighing and tutting and cursing then suddenly launch in again.
