The Daily Mash has this to say re Jeff bridges win: "Elsewhere Jeff Bridges finally became the first Jeff Bridges to win Best Actor for his 18th portrayal of a very slightly differ...

Another film I just saw for the first time that is absolutely stunning is "The Son" (Le Fils), a French/Belgian film starring olivier Gourmet (who won Best Actor at Cannes for this performance). It is very emotional, and highly recommended. Roger Ebert's Review said this, in part: The directors, Jea...

Just watched The Hurt Locker on dvd - what an amazing film. I do hope it gets the Oscar it deserves and trounces Avatar. I resent that. I really enjoyed Avatar, since I'm basically a hippie; it had a lot of good tree-hugger vibes, even if it was over-publicized. Plus, with the time and money that w...

Synecdoche, New York

Has anyone seen Synecdoche, New York with Philip Seymour Hoffman? My wife and I watched it last night, and the jury is still out from me, but my wife didn't like it at all. It isn't an easy film and it asks a lot of questions, and I find that I am still thinking about it the next day. I will watch i...

I have never seen Akhnaten and would love to. I have the opera on cd.

I also have two unreleased operas: Appomattox and The Fall Of The House Of Usher from live performances broadcast on radio.

ENO put on some great operas. I saw John Adams' Doctor Atomic there and was very impressed. Some years ago we saw Nixon In China too.

I get 2 half-price tickets as part of their access scheme for the disabled.

Yes, the String Quartet is good. But I especially love Glass's Sanskrit opera, Satyagraha : http://www.philipglass.com/html/compositions/satyagraha.html Wow - I am going to English National Opera's production of Satyagraha on March 6th at the London Coliseum. The second of three operas I am seeing ...

It is a pity that the original text is not on Gutenberg - that would make PL and copyright matters easier. The Strictly Genteel website, states that anything not part of the text is copyright, but that there may have been some editing for typos, formatting for html etc. I assume this is PD as there ...

A(nother) question on copyright.

I was considering my next project and decided on a booklet published in 1873 - so I assume, well out of copyright. It is, though, not on Gutenberg, so I searched for a text to use. The booklet is: The Object and Manner Of Our Lord's Return by Charles Taze Russell. A search on Google came up with a s...

An irishwoman goes to see a lawyer, seeking a divorce from her husband. The lawyer suggests that she may have grounds for non-support. "Oh no," she says, he's always provided for me and the kids. He works hard, and brings his wage-packet unopened every week." "Perhaps, then, we could go for grounds ...
