I have the same issue in chapter 1, which I intend to record Sunday, and I'm waffling between literally mumbling ("Seventeen mmmphphm") and saying "Seventeen-blank." Probably "Seventeen-blank."

I absolutely agree that we have to decide to what degree we are an "archive for posterity" versus a "conduit for the classics." We have to recognize up front that we cannot possibly reproduce the Gutenberg versions in slavish detail, both because the Gutenberg editions are not themselves flawless (m...

Huh, I've never had any trouble with it -- what sort of issues are you experiencing? I'm running 10.4.2 as well.

Mark Twain was mentioned by Squid in the first post, and this is an excellent point. If we need to edit Kipling, why not Twain? And then where does it stop? ... Why should we presume that kids who listen to this great literature are any less bright than we were? The distinction I see between Kiplin...

It's precisely the "child's ears" problem that concerns me. Kara, I've seen both "plain black's best" and "plain black's best for a man". I'll happily do two versions, since the change is so minor; but I think that in addition to a note in the post, I'll put "pg13" and "g" in the filenames, and inse...

Bowdlerization

There is one small topic that concerns me about recording Kipling's Just So Stories . Specifically, in the original text of "How the Leopard Got His Spots", and thus in the Gutenberg edition of it, there is an offensive racial epithet. On the one hand, that's what Kipling actually wrote. On the othe...

One of my other hobbies is doing the sound and video in the main events rooms for local science fiction and anime conventions, so I already had more microphones, stands, cables, and such than would ever be needed for this project. I just rigged up my sound board, plugged in a condenser mic, and ran ...

I have recorded the Tolstoy (and sent you a link to it), but did not have time to record the Shelley. However, I have read it through, and anticipate recording it Monday night.

I've looked over the chapters, and they're awesome chapters, but I need to record my Tolstoy first. I'm planning to do that today; if it goes so smoothly that I can keep on cruising, maybe I'll try the Frankenstein, but if somebody else can do it right away, go for it...
