Re: Cover art: Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness - public domain?

That's probably a wise decision, unfortunate as it's such an interesting piece of art. I also found https://www.cinematerial.com/movies/korkarlen-i12364/p/71xto6nk which says "Copyright by respective movie studios". I'm not totally convinced this site and notice is authoritative, but they ...

Re: Cover art: Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness - public domain?

Since the poster is from the Swedish film release, we can assume the poster was never released in the USA, therefore it falls under Swedish copyright. Accordingly it lapses into the public domain 70 years after the death of the artist. If we assume the artist was 35 years old in 1921, and they lived...

Re: Cover art: Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness - public domain?

Criterion Collection chose not to use this image for its DVD cover art, they went with something less attractive. Why wouldn't they use this beautiful, iconic, first edition film poster? It's certainly very tempting to use it and overlook copyright in the sense of prove it's copyright vs. prove it's...

Cover art: Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness - public domain?

Regarding Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness: https://forum.librivox.org/viewtopic.php?t=40928 https://librivox.org/thy-soul-shall-bear-witness-by-selma-lagerloef/ The LibriVox cover art was uploaded to https://commons.wikimedia.org which requires a free license. As a work of LibriVox it is PD. However thi...

Édouard Laboulaye’s Fairy Tales

This book is currently having a "moment". The New York Review of Books has an article: https://www.nybooks.com/daily/2019/04/06/the-sly-modernity-of-edouard-laboulayes-fairy-tales/ Princeton University Press has a (new) translation: https://press.princeton.edu/titles/13263.html The book is...

Re: Audioliterature and Audible

> Without LibriVox, My words would less likely be heard, as they would be relegated to the great maw of Archive.org audio uploads This is exactly right. LibriVox is unique and special. Not the same as self-publishing. > Make no mistake, I'm in it for the glory, not the money! I think that's how many...

I would be interested in learning more about why the principle exists, the philosophy behind it. BTW thanks TriciaG for the defense and recog...

If it was CC-BY (Attribution) it would be a crime. They couldn't upload to Audible under a different name it would be a copyright violation.

Re: Audioliterature and Audible

I do believe LibriVox is in the wrong forcing content creators (at least single-narrator works) to use Public Domain. Like at Wikipedia, authors have a range of license options to choose from, including PD and some CC. The attitude of LV has been PD or leave - end of discussion. I'm afraid the ident...

Audiobooks from Library of Congress

Since the 1930s, the Library of Congress has been recording audio-books for the blind and handicap. As a work of the federal government, the narration is in the public domain https://www.loc.gov/legal/#privacy_policy > Items created by Library of Congress employees in the scope of their employment a...

[PD USA ONLY] Wooden Crosses - WWI novel

https://archive.org/details/woodencrosses00dorgrich

Often compared with All Quite on the Western Front. One of the best war novels. Well known in France where it almost won the Prix Goncourt (lost to In Search of Lost Time). English translation is 1920. Well reviewed on Amazon.

Re: LibriVox monthly statistics

Would it be possible and of value to include a metric on number of hours read. Since a work can be 30m or 40hr long. Tracking total hours gives a fair representation of how active readers are. When I used to track my own reading habits, I would sometimes pick shorter books so my year-end reading tot...
