Re: [GRP/Non-Fict.] Passages from the Life of a Philosopher by Charles Babbage - lt

Well, I hope I'm part of a trend, but I too have run into a change in circumstances that have kept me from completing section 8. I'll have to return it. Very sorry.

Re: To breathe, or not to breathe?

I suggest using the same approach as with most audio book narrators. Leave them in; if you ever listen to an audio book with the breaths completely removed, that sounds unnatural. Your breaths might need some slight processing: lower the volume of heavy breaths, those that sound too loud to you. The...

I'll also take Sections 19 and 20 to finish out the Hawaii visit. Brings back many wonderful memories.

Re: Noise from laptop fan

To add to Tony's and Dale's excellent advice, in addition to distance barriers between the laptop and the microphone help. I have a desk in my recording space with my laptop on a shelf under the top of the desk, vibration isolated, as Tony mentioned, with rubber feet. I'm surrounded by moving blanke...

Re: Suggestions for cardioid microphone, please.

Peter, the Blue Yeti's I've seen have multiple patterns and one of the selections is cardioid, maybe yours if different -- I'm no Yeti expert! But even with a cardioid pickup pattern, sometimes the background noise is still too much. A headset with a noise cancelling microphone, as in the thread tha...

Re: n00b HW issue: Pyle PDMIC58 mike, Behringer UM2, Win 10

I agree that a new microphone, probably a condenser, would be a more cost effective solution. Your interface does have 48v phantom power and so will support condenser microphones. But increasing the gain gets the right volume level and doesn't add noise, you may be all set.

Re: n00b HW issue: Pyle PDMIC58 mike, Behringer UM2, Win 10

You might also find, as I did, that turning the gain all the way up or very high introduces noise. For dynamic mics, I added a Cloud Lifter: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CL1Cloud . It's not cheap and may be out of your budget -- and it requires an interface that supplies 48V, one that also...

Re: DR Recordings - for the Reader or Editor to "fix"?

For general readings, not necessarily DR recordings -- perhaps this should be a new topic -- what do you expect or want from the reader in addition to corrections, noise reduction, and cleaning up clicks and pops, plus meeting the levels using the guidance from Checker or Replay gain? I typically ap...
