Re: Recording volume on Audacity

First of all, it's been 8 years since I've been here, so I'm not up to speed about the "Checker" application, and have not downloaded it. Even so, I have to ask ... if it reports a "level of 89 dB", then what is the reference level? The only useful "dB" scale reference in digital recording is "dBfs"...

Is this in the public domain _here_?

Goodness. It's been years since I've been here. At any rate, I have a question concerning a non-librivox project. (Hence my posting it in Off-Topic.) Here in New Brunswick, Canada , a community theatre group is proposing to perform Toad of Toad Hall , by A. A. Milne. Toad of Toad Hall was published ...

Whatever the speed is for satellite, is it bidirectional? Meaning, it might be faster than dial-up for downloads, but how is it for uploads (which is what librivox readers do when they send in sections)? I've never used cable internet access, and it may be way different now, but I had the impression...

I read it as it stood, but if I come across it in future, I will take all that into consideration. Thanks Planish. Well, I would just read it as written anyway, whatever the meaning. I wouldn't normally try to "decode" text, unless it was something I was fairly confident about, like the substitutio...

Re: What do these letters stand for?

Here's what I make of it. The year of our Lord a thousand two hundred and fifty-three, the third day of May, in the great Hall of the King at Westminster, in the presence, and by the assent, of the Lord Henry, by the Grace of God King of England, and the Lords Richard, E arl of Cornwall, his brother...

... but i don't know what happens if you try to amplify too much and then don't check the box. If it clips, it will come out sounding like a kazoo. More or less a square wave, instead of a combination of rounded sine waves. Take a listen, 24 seconds into http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF4qii8S3gw I...

Quite some time ago, I had bought an mp3 CD on eBay, filled with Old Time Radio Science Fiction shows. Later I find that they all came from archive.org . I wasn't all bitter and twisted about it, because it was so cheap. From the feedback ... "audio is done by several readers and less professional" ...

I only use a little bit of noise removal. I find that when I listen to podcasts with artifacts from noise removal it "jumps out at me" all the time, because it's so unnatural. On the other hand, I find that I get used to moderate levels of regular noise after a minute or two and it seems to disappea...

A work-around may be to do this: - Get the RSS feed URL from the Librivox catalog entry for the story you're interested in. e.g For "The Theory of Social Revolutions" at http://librivox.org/the-theory-of-social-revolutions-by-brooks-adams/ , right-click on "RSS Feed" to "copy shortcut" or "copy URL"...

I usually make up a "script" version of the text, and at the very beginning I would make a note of all (hardware and software) level settings, and exactly what angle my mic boom was at. That helped a lot to get consistency.

I was going to say that your sample file sounds almost exactly like when you select Generate > Noise > White Noise from the menu. (This is with Audacity 1.3.6)

Another Holywood thing I don't get (having recently seen Prince Caspian ): When there is a battle involving archers, the archers let loose a volley of arrows into the massed enemy troops, usually to great effect. What do they do then? They step back out of the way, even though they still have at lea...

Any version of "tumult" does not sound weird to me, but "kway" for "quay" just sounds wrong to me. Apparently, Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay started life as Sittin' on the Dock of the Quay , but the publishers thought the controversy just wasn't worth it, so they went for the easy option. Shame rea...
