Re: A question about the number of books in Croatian

Thanks, it's obviously not a big deal. I would have been utterly shocked if there had been over 500 works in Croatian!

A question about the number of books in Croatian

The site lists that there are over 500 books completed in the Croatian language, but I can only find four. I assume that the 500 is a mistake. Am I wrong?

Is anybody else REALLY interested in original publication da

Is anyone else really interested in the original publication date of any book you read? I'm not suggesting that Librivox require that people include this in their recordings, but does anyone else miss this or find yourself looking up every book on the internet so you can find out when it was written...

Re: Summary of "The Wound Dresser" - "War of the Rebellion"?

Glad to hear that what remains of my original post isn't offensive. As far as the summary goes, I'm fine with it as it is. I'm all for original titles and leaving documents the way they were originally. It's important so that we can more accurately understand the thoughts of those who have gone befo...

Re: Summary of "The Wound Dresser" - "War of the Rebellion"?

You're right. I've edited my comment to remove the last two points. If people object further, I can edit further.

Re: Summary of "The Wound Dresser" - "War of the Rebellion"?

When it comes to the American Civil War (or, as I would put it, The War Between the States) people's collective opinion is strangely inconsistent. When the various Yugoslav republics broke away and were invaded by the Federal Yugoslavian Army people generally considered it at act of aggression - for...

Re: Summary of "The Wound Dresser" - "War of the Rebellion"?

If that is what Whitman called the war, then fine. That tells us more about Whitman than it does about the war - that he was a man of the times, caught up in the events of the times. I just think that the summary is not very clear. As far as it being offensive, I don't thank that there are many Libr...

Summary of "The Wound Dresser" - "War of the Rebellion"?

I'd just like to point out that the summary of "The Wound Dresser" by Walt Whitman refers to the American Civil War as "The War of the Rebellion." I would suggest changing this for two reasons. 1) Few people know what it means; and 2) It is offensive to many Southerners. If, for ...

Re: Trying to remember books I read as a kid.

LibriVox rocks! Thank you so much for your attention and help. The Jane Langton suggestion was right on. I will definitely try to track down these books (although they look very expensive - maybe when I'm back in the States I can get them from the library). As I looked at them, though, I realized th...

Trying to remember books I read as a kid.

Hey! When I was a kid, in the early 1980's, I found a series of kid's fantasy books at the local library. They were thin, oversized paperbacks and there was no continuity between them. They were just different stories of kids encountering magic in the real world. Many of them seem to have been set i...

Re: Non-native-speakers' bad pronunciation & strong accents

Every third work on the site - really ? I do think you are a bit out in that . Yes there are a very few readers that I find difficult to follow - I just don't pick books to listen to for pleasure that they are reading. A couple of them the problem is partly caused by the amount of background noise ...

Re: Non-native-speakers' bad pronunciation & strong accents

About Guero's comment, I actually have to say that I agree with him completely, but that it is a conscious choice. In an ideal word, it would only be native speakers recording in their language, and that would be great. But since we cannot achieve that, I think most of us have made our peace with i...

Re: Non-native-speakers' bad pronunciation & strong accents

I am offended that someone unfairly insulted the original poster (someone on the "nice" side) and no one seems to mind. Honestly, I didn't like the tone of BT's post and thought it was over the top. I just chose not to post that...until now. Thanks. "Over the top" is a go...

Re: Non-native-speakers' bad pronunciation & strong accents

I am offended that someone unfairly insulted the original poster (someone on the "nice" side) and no one seems to mind. Well, frankly I was kind of offended that the original poster insulted many of our readers by explicitly saying that their feelings were less important than "the qu...

Re: Non-native-speakers' bad pronunciation & strong accents

The reason I originally posted on this thread is because I felt like the original poster was not being given a fair hearing. Clearly, people have posted on this topic before and so to you long-time members, this is part of a long-running discussion. From these posts I would guess that there have bee...
