Re: Goodbye, Cloud Mountain

I'm saddened to hear that Alan Davis-Drake passed away. I enjoyed so many of his recordings. A few months ago, I posted a review of his reading of a great poem about life, death, and funerals, "The Emperor of Ice Cream". I'll link it here as a remembrance of his life.: http://freelistens.b...

Poetry suggestions for reviews

Next month (November 2010), I'm doing a series on poetry reviews at my audiobook review blog Free Listens . The thing is, I don't read much poetry, but I'd like to change that. I need some suggestions of wonderfully read audio recordings of poems for people who don't usually read poetry. Please give...

As Kayray pointed out, my blog Free Listens has a number of Librivox books that I've selected and reviewed. These readings are, in my opinion, of high enough quality to share with someone, though not always professional-quality. If you're looking for British accents, do a search on my blog for "...

I'm excited you took up my suggestion! A few notes on pronunciation of Spanish words: Every vowel is pronounced: "a" is AH (as in father), "i" is EE, "o" is OH, "e" is EH (like bet) when in the beginning or middle of a word and something like the final e in ca...

I've been away from Librivox for about the past year, finishing up my PhD thesis, but I recently listened to "A Prisoner of Zenda" and enjoyed it so much that I created a CD cover. I've uploaded it to http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrsethjones/ There's also covers for "A Girl of the Lim...

I mistakingly assumed that the bigger book publishers would also be the largest audiobook publishers as well, so I never even looked at recordedbooks.com. I agree that largest rate of book release isn't the same as largest collection volume. I need to be a bit more careful in my terms. Still, I thin...

Just in case January was a fluke (people being out on winter break with more time to record), I decided to count again for February: LibriVox: 39 Random House: 25 Simon & Schuster: 13 HarperCollins:31 Penguin:4 Once again, LibriVox is the largest audiobook publisher in the world! Methods: For Li...

Curiosity (and procrastination) got the better of me. January Releases for U.S. audiobook publishers (rough count): Librivox: 36 Random House: 35 Simon & Schuster: 21 HarperCollins: 19 Penguin USA: 6 For the Librivox count, I didn't include weekly poetry or the post on the podcasts. I did includ...

I just did a count of all audiobooks (abridged and unabridged) for all of Random House for January. I counted 35 separate titles. If you'd like to double check this or do more research, go to http://www.randomhouse.com/audio/catalog/ and search for all formats, all categories in the last 6 months (l...

I'm guessing Random House is the largest English-language audiobook publisher, since they're the large English-language book publisher. Books on Tape is a division of Random House. I'm not sure if it's Random House's only audiobook division. From the New Titles section of their website ( http://www....

If Congress hadn't passed the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act of 1998, the works published in 1923 would be available today. Because several major companies (notably Disney) didn't want their works falling out of their control, we'll have to wait until 2018. However, if you're wanting to get a he...

One failure and two successes: Caeristhiona, I really tried to make a cover for Daddy Long Legs, but nothing I did seemed to work well. I'm sorry. I can send you what I have, if you'd like to try. Starlite, I've made a cover for Uncle Tom's Cabin. Do you just need the cover or the track listings too...
