Re: SOLO The Golden Bough. Part VI. The Scapegoat by James Frazer -brrot

Wow, all these thoughts about Haman and Mordecai really are fascinating. Now that I know how he wraps things up, I will be even more interested to hear the missing bit in Section 17 (I'll listen to that as soon as you can get the intro added because I know you will be eager to finish everything up.....

Re: SOLO The Golden Bough. Part VI. The Scapegoat by James Frazer -brrot

I went to listen to Section 17, but it's missing the "Section 17 blah blah blah" intro... and since that would throw off all the rest of the timestamps when you add that in, I decided to just skip that section for now and move on to Section 18. After you add in the intro, I'll do the actua...

Re: [SOLO] Weird Tales: Jules de Grandin Vol. 1 by Seabury Quinn - icequeen

Argh, I felt kind of cheated by that last one: the whole Brazil-detour was just misdirection... he should have just focused it on India from the start. I wonder what made him do the Brazil thing? And it was so creepy about the pig at the end, though I suppose maybe de Grandin got the idea from all t...

Re: [SOLO] Weird Tales: Jules de Grandin Vol. 1 by Seabury Quinn - icequeen

Ooooh, halfway through the final story........ and the title is still a mystery, ha ha. (But got my attention!) I thought I would do the other half tonight but I'm just too sleepy, ha ha. So now I will probably end up having dreams about embalming or something: eeeeek! Anyway, all good on the Sectio...

Re: [SOLO] Weird Tales: Jules de Grandin Vol. 1 by Seabury Quinn - icequeen

Eeeeeek, long pigs! This is definitely not Captain Nemo making everything out of fish and seaweed! But the poor giant octopus got a bad rap here: he might eat a little shark, but he's not going to eat people. Section 5 edits all good, and there are just a few little things here in 6 to check on: 3:0...

Re: [SOLO] Weird Tales: Jules de Grandin Vol. 1 by Seabury Quinn - icequeen

Ooooh, this shipwrecked one is my favorite of the de Grandin stories so far; it kinds of reminds me of 20000 Leagues under the Sea! And the reading sounds great; in that first long part (Section 5), I noticed just 2 little things: 11:49 for my flailing legs (not: flagging) 25:16 this interment which...

Yay to end-of-allergies! I'm just checking in to say that the past week has been bonkers for me, but I should be able to get caught up on Wednesday and Thursday. I'm so curious to hear the new story!!!

Re: SOLO The Delinquent, Vol. IV, Nos. 1-7 by National Prisoners' Aid Asoc. - rr

Wow, this is going to be so intense to listen to! It was great to hear your voice again... but what a contrast to the fun storytelling in the Tales book. Of course, even though this is not a book of tales, there are so many stories *implied* in these pieces, and grim stories they are. Especially liv...

Re: SOLO The Golden Bough. Part VI. The Scapegoat by James Frazer -brrot

I would love to learn more about how all this played out in Australia! Here in North America, the public domain materials cover a whole spectrum from the worst sort of misrepresentation and appropriation imaginable to some work done with a real respect for other cultures. I am so grateful for the wo...

Re: SOLO The Golden Bough. Part VI. The Scapegoat by James Frazer -brrot

Allegedly, this chapter and the note at the end, were a point of controversy. Until someone shows a guide to the errors that are supposed to exist in frazers works, then I don't see any reason why the criticism stands. As far as I have read, nothing stands out as a belligerent attitude from the vic...

https://librivox.org/uploads/brownrottger/goldenboughviscapegoat_16_frazer_128kb.mp3 Wow, all that information about the Book of Esther was fascinating! I've read it multiple times, but I never guessed at these connections, like Marduk and Mordecai. I wonder if all the Near Eastern archaeology in t...

Thanks, Larry! And yes to the cover; it's so cool! I don't know who made it (not me; I have zero graphic design skills ha ha), but it makes me happy whenever I see the cover at the Archive. I hope we will get lucky with the 1927 cover too! Hi Laura You can always find out who did the cover art by d...
