Re: Just lost a hard disk drive - oh joy !

"Now I am become dd, destroyer of worlds." That's exactly it. linux command line is the bomb. I hate how everything not-linux doesn't allow anything you want it to do. The customizations people have done to linux is incredible. Downside of all that power is all that power. But if you are ...

Re: Just lost a hard disk drive - oh joy !

the tool is able to bring back images, but not so much video, it only brings back short sections of video, 20? seconds at a time or so. It only brings back set sizes of chunks to interpret, and so it's whatever fits into a chunk. Have not seen any txt files as yet.

Re: Just lost a hard disk drive - oh joy !

I made a 120GB image from the lost partition, and asked scalpel to go after too much it seems. It choked the 500GB partition it was on with 300Gb of unpacked found files. False positives galore. An interactive way to do it would be so much better given it's about 6 or 7 hours per attempt. Better tha...

Re: Just lost a hard disk drive - oh joy !

You can either keep the list of file names, removing them later with 'rm', or add '-delete' at the end to have 'find' delete matching files itself. [2]: For example, weeding out some pesky INI files, of which some program seemed to have written hundreds: grep -rlIF "[IniVersion]" You prob...

Re: Just lost a hard disk drive - oh joy !

Then of course, there's 'scalpel', which can look through even a hard drive without a partition table at all, and look for files matching certain parameters (JPEG or PNG image headers, .zip compression blocks, etc.) and copy them automatically elsewhere: https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/find-lost-fi...

Re: where to find public domain music with documentation

Thank you so much for this, it is exactly what I have been searching for. Thank you.

I'm reminded of whale rider, I loved that film when it came out. Makes you feel good and makes you cry too. I hope I can visit that part of the world one day, I see many sailors traveling there, looks so lovely.

Re: Pirated productions

( My one book on Audible " Potty Training for Boys and Girls ", a gripping page turner which I narrated with great passion and depth, cured me of wanting to do this any more .) I couldn't help but think with the mention of potty, and book, and page turner all in one, of the mental picture...

Re: how to hear the last chapters

If the latency of the badly designed webpage is low enough then all the extra rubbish overhead icing on the cake loads up ok, otherwise it's like shoveling concrete into a kitchen sink disposal, everything gets clogged and the audio starts at a random point anywhere in the first 30 seconds. (oh, if ...

Re: how to hear the last chapters

I've tested the links and there worked fine. The sections are correkt and in the intros are the right titles. You can also listen to the files in the librivox catalog ( https://librivox.org/an-american-tragedy-vol2-by-theodore-dreiser/ ). So no need for frustration. 8-) Oh, and the author died in 1...

Re: how to hear the last chapters

as described in the reading aloud, chapter 39 comes up with this link (eventually) or to read it's 34 (XXXIV) or it's 43 to click on. My hands-on experience with this particular tool is limited (thankfully I haven't had to use it "for real"), but the 'testdisk' utility is designed for recovering from exactly this type of thing.[..] You won't need the "download a live cd" bit,[...] That one has been working ver...
