Re: [SOLO] London Labour etc., Vol 1 -Mayhew-ans

Thanks, Steve; I'll probably not buy a copy, though. The "consent forms" and demand for addresses, and the reputedly stodgy style puts me off a little. it's true that there are people still in a similar state in London now as in Mayhew's time. A few years back, three friends and I decided to got to ...

Thanks; it's why I post monthly. I like to see other reader's choices, and I like to think that mine are interesting, too.

Re: One Book a Week Club 2021

My June list: 42 Sherlock Holmes, the hidden years - Ed. Michael Kurland. A collection of short stories by different authors about what Sherlock Holmes did in the years between his supposed death at the Reichenbach Falls and his reappearance. Some very good, a few (in my opinion) clumsy and tedious,...

Re: The all-new "HELP! I have an Audacity problem" thread

Generally, the input device is the microphone, the output device your speakers or headphones. Some microphones (the Blue Yeti, for example) have a plug for headphones so you can monitor your recording as you speak, and so are effectively both input and output devices.

Re: SOLO London Labour Volume III -ans

I suppose it would be possible to have tables saved as both PDFs (each titled to give its location in the recording) and all recorded together as a separate sound file, with an index recorded at the front, giving timing locations for each table within the sound file. I'll try that, next time I read ...

Re: SOLO London Labour Volume III -ans

Section 94 PL ok.

EDIT:
Section 95:
Just one small correction:

30.09 At Dartmoor, when visitors wish to try the prisoner's soup, " I hear "prisoners" instead of "visitors"

Re: One Book a Week Club 2021

My May list: 37 A Wizard of Mars - Diane Duane. Ninth in the Young Wizards series. A re-read; I read it once, years ago, but had never really felt any urge to read it again, til I took it up a few days ago. There's not a very complex story line, but it's interesting watching Kit and Nita dealing wit...

Re: SOLO London Labour Volume III -ans

Section 92 PL okay. Congratulations, Gill; I should be finished PLing within the next day or so. EDIT: Section 93: 00.14 (sort of...) repeat of part number. A word I'd not encountered before .... "... the mere human street-sweepings--the great living mixen..." (mixen - pile of dung or refuse) Mayhew...

Re: SOLO London Labour Volume III -ans

Definitely, Anne; but I think it would need "reader's notes" in place of the tables, to point to the external files.

Having read a couple of very technical solos, I really do feel that the LV policy on reader's notes needs to be a little more flexible.

Re: SOLO London Labour Volume III -ans

I hadn't noticed the peculiar numbers for London and Wales (all bar the first!). I've had a look at three of the scans on archive.org and they show the same. I mean to get a reader's ticket to the British Library, when the restrictions have eased enough. If I can get a ticket soon, I'll see if I can...

Re: SOLO London Labour Volume III -ans

Section 90 PL okay; word (and number) perfect! I was thinking, as we were going through it, that when there are large tables in the text (as we've both found in London Labour) that, if they are longer than some arbitrary size - say, five minutes, they could be handled as a separate section, with a n...
