Re: [SOLO] Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese - Reid-ans
Thanks for catching that, Laura; edited and re-uploaded. I loved the very Dickensian names of the local tradesmen (surely fictional!): Messrs. Pewter and Antimony, type-founders; Messrs. Quoin, Case, and Chappell, printers to the Board of Blue Cloth; Messrs. Cutedge and Treecalf, bookbinders; with t...

Thanks for catching them, Laura. I've edited them all and re-uploaded.
Yes, it paints an awful picture! It's a pleasant little piece, though, with the furious waiters and barmaid.

Re: [SOLO] Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese - Reid-ans
Thanks, Laura; I've uploaded Chapter Nine.
I didn't manage to get to Gough Square over the weekend; shopping on Saturday, and waiting for an Amazon delivery on Sunday. I hope to get there some time this week.

Re: Pronunciation help: all languages
Thank you very much, Sonia. It's a funny little book about a pub in London that has stood there since just after the Great Fire in 1667. I've not been into it, though I've occasionally been down the alley where its front door is. I'm definitely going to explore it now! I've uploaded my first attempt...

Re: Pronunciation help: all languages
Yes, it's the Cheshire Cheese book; I think he starts all of his chapters with a quote. This one is at the start of the chapter about the great pudding served up in the pub.

Re: Pronunciation help: all languages
And, from the same book as my last query, could someone help me with this French quote, please? ... including the name of the author.
_La découverte d’un mets nouveau fait plus pour le bonheur du genre
humain que la découverte d’une étoile._—BRILLAT-SAVARIN.

Re: [SOLO] Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese - Reid-ans
And here's chapter 8, Dr Johnson's Homes and Haunts, the shortest so far, at under three minutes. It mentions him living in Gough Square. Looking at the map, Gough Square, where Johnson spent part of his life, seems to be in an area that I've never wandered round. I'll have a look today or tomorrow....

Re: [SOLO] Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese - Reid-ans
Thanks, Laura. I hadn't realised we were both talking about the same anecdote! I've uploaded chapter 7 - Club Life at the 'Cheese' But I've no idea of what was meant by the line "If Fashion's forms its current freeze..." in "Envoi" at about 1430, so I may have the emphasis/intona...

Here you go. An odd last line .... it feels much less sensitive than the rest of the poem.

Re: Play Suggestions
I'd like to suggest "The Watched Pot", a three act play by Saki. The only problem is the date of the copy on archive.org, but it looks okay to me. Wikipedia link for play: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Watched_Pot Text of play is in ... The Novels and Plays of Saki, Vol. 1 Source: http...
