Re: COMPLETE SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

I'm seeing "Nature, Letters, Christianity - Other." This is better. Any chance you could replace Christianity with Travel or Geology, which figure much more prominently in the book? Apologies and thanks! I'll be much more careful when filling out the project generator next time...

Re: COMPLETE SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

On the catalog page the genres listed are "Letters, Christianity - Other, Life Sciences." Is it possible to have the changes you made reflected here?

Re: COMPLETE SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

Thank you, Kristine! :D I'm embarrassed to make one further request (and happy to tend to it myself if that's possible): In the list of genres, could we replace Christianity with Nature? I hadn't read the whole book when I started this project ( ) and was under the impression that many of the...

Re: COMPLETE SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

Thank you, Kristine, for all your help! I'll now work on getting the cover uploaded. If it's too late to edit the description on the catalog page, I certainly understand. If that's still possible, I'd love to replace my description with the book's brief preface: When John Muir was a student in the U...

Re: SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

Sue: All sounds good... Do you recommend a track listing? Many thanks again for suggesting this work. I'd never read these letters but had lived them, in a sense. I'd never gone out of the Valley and into the high country until a decade ago. The alpine meadows--Muir's "wild gardens"--the tarns and c...

Re: SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

Done! Section 9, 19:59. https://librivox.org/uploads/kikisaulite/letterstoafriend_09_muir_128kb.mp3 Total time: 3:49:31 (slightly tricky arithmetic!) I discovered I'd said women's rights instead of woman's rights at 18:26 but since a lawnmower had started up (which could go on forever) and no meanin...

Re: SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

Thanks for the editing advice. I've been trying to shorten the process by listening both for sounds and word-for-word correctness at the same time, but that's clearly letting a few bad sounds through. Minor enough that I didn't correct them in this case, but will reconsider my process. I uploa...

Re: SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

Section 8, 35:10 https://librivox.org/uploads/kikisaulite/letterstoafriend_08_muir_128kb.mp3 When I have two Audacity windows open, plus a third window for the text, I have too much trouble with windows disappearing. If there's a trick for avoiding this, I'm listening. I've been doing my re-dos at t...

Re: SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

I'll work on the cover between the last two sections. Thanks for all the helpful advice. I'll have less time than usual this week so probably won't finish till next. It will be exciting to have it available. SNF073 should be coming out soon as well. It turns out that the climactic reunion between Mu...

Re: SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

Very helpful, as always. :D I'm looking forward to trying out changing pitch and tempo. I've often had to lower the volume on edits and will try going slightly below the surrounding level, as recommended on one of the Forum threads. Doing a whole book has certainly been a learning experience. I've d...

Section 7, 40:30 https://librivox.org/uploads/kikisaulite/letterstoafriend_07_muir_128kb.mp3 During my first year as a student at UC Berkeley I lived in LeConte Hall, named for the LeConte mentioned often in this section, a professor of geology at the university and co-founder with Muir of the Sierr...

Re: SOLO: Letters to a Friend by John Muir - kiki

Muir was indeed correct. Yosemite Valley has the classic U-shape that results after a glacier pushes through a V-shaped canyon cut by a river. Scraping the valley's sides away leaves "hanging valleys"--the famous falls that were formerly earthbound creeks feeding the Merced. My favorite part of the ...
