Ainsworth's Achilles heel are his descriptive passage. He is heading straight towards his exciting conclusion to the chapter, when he pauses for a lengthy description of the prison cell. Leaden, and stifling!

Quite melodramatic, don't you think? What I want to know is, if we last see Sir Rowland seated in a chair, why does he next appear sprawled over his sister's body?

On the other hand, Thames is impossibly Good. Heck, Jack was born to hang. (BTW, where'd you find that Jack offed himself? On Wikipedia, they not only say Jack was hung, they give a full account of the affair.)
