Tamburlaine the Great Part 2 by Christopher Marlowe (1564 - 1593)

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: http://librivox.org/tamburlaine-the-great-part-2-by-christopher-marlowe/
Tamburlaine the Great is the name of a play in two parts by Christopher Marlowe. It is loosely based on the life of the Central Asian emperor, Timur 'the lame'. Written in 1587 or 1588, the play is a milestone in Elizabethan public drama; it marks a turning away from the clumsy language and loose plotting of the earlier Tudor dramatists, and a new interest in fresh and vivid language, memorable action, and intellectual complexity. Along with Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, it may be considered the first popular success of London's public stage.

In Part 2, Tamburlaine grooms his sons to be conquerors in his wake as he continues to conquer his neighbouring kingdoms. One of his sons, Calyphas, preferring to stay by his mother's side and not risk death, incurs Tamburlaine's wrath. Seeing this son as a coward, Tamburlaine kills him in anger after a battle in which he refuses to fight. During this time, Bajazeth's son, Callapine, plans to avenge his father's death. Finally, while attacking an Islamic nation, he scornfully burns a copy of the Qur'an and claims to be greater than God. Suddenly, Tamburlaine is struck ill and dies, giving his power to his remaining sons, but still aspiring to greatness as he departs life. (Summary by Wikipedia)
  1. Is there a deadline?

We ask that you submit your recorded sections within 1-2 months of placing your claim (or by the target completion date, whatever is sooner). Please note that to be fair to the readers who have completed their sections in a timely way, if you haven't submitted your recording(s) after two months, your sections will automatically be re-opened for other readers to claim, unless you post in this thread to request an extension. Extensions will be granted at the discretion of the Book Coordinator. If you cannot do your section, for whatever reason, just let me know and it’ll go back to the pool. There’s no shame in this; we’re all volunteers and things happen. The target completion date for this project is 30 June 2011.
  2. How to claim a part, and 'how it all works' here

To find a role to record, simply look at point 5. below at the sections. All the ones without names beside them are “up for grabs.” Click "Post reply" at the top left of the screen and tell us which role you’d like to read. Read points 6. to 8. below for what to do before, during and after your recording.
  3. New to recording?

Please read our Newbie Guide to Recording!
  4. Where do I find the text? Source text (please only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/1589/1589-h/1589-h.htm
Details of lines and roles for each scene can be found in the following Googledocs spreadsheet:
    https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AuuRyBYWBFB8dElYQVFOek9tZWtvQ1BjMnhvbTBpN0E&hl=en&authkey=CMGt58UF#gid=0

Please note that the Googledocs spreadsheet has two pages: the first gives the text links for each scene, and the second indicates which scenes a character appears in. Navigation between the sheets is made by using the buttons at the bottom of the page.
  5. Please claim roles (the numbers in the first column below)! Please note: All Librivox recordings are in the public domain. When you submit your recording, you will be placing your recording in the public domain as well.

Several characters also appear in Part 1 of Tamburlaine the Great. It is expected that the same reader would read the role in both plays.

With regard to the pronunciation of the names, Martin Geeson has kindly agreed to the record the Dramatis Personae in advance. For the sake of accuracy please use the pronunciation specified by Martin.
Please note that Mahomet is pronounced MA-hom-et.

I've asked for Corsoe in Part 1, and would like Calyphas in Part 2. They are far enough apart (two plays) that I think I could do voice characterizations to distinguish an agéd Machiavellian from a callow young peacenik.

Hi Timothy

The role is yours.

Cheers

Algy

PS. I take that you were not a fan of the Doug Anthony All Stars? I remember one of the crew was a bloke who had a name vaguely similar to yours and who took self-love to extravagant heights......

Hello again tg. I found concubine 3 & 4 are available, but I found one line that is all the concubines together. Is that what's available? I'd be glad to piteously cry, "O, pity us, my lord, and save our honour!" if you need me. I think I like #4's character best, she's more interesting (schnert)!

If you would like to suggest any of the remaining roles (I think they are all male) I'd be glad to do them on either part 1 or 2. I know you prefer men to do men and women to do women, but I'm willing.http://forum.librivox.org/posting.php?mode=edit&f=27&p=556898#
