Joyce

Part 1: https://librivox.org/uploads/toddhw/goldkiller_joyce_1.mp3 (10:44)

If this read is good, I'll look to engage with the rest of the parts tomorrow.

Your recording is better than good; very good seems about right to me. You have a talent for dramatic reading. I hope you'll do some other LV DR's or plays as well. Your pacing on Joyce's side of the call with Chickie is excellent and I won't mess with it when I edit Part 1. Very 8-)

That said, I have just a few notes for you:
  • (3:18) "hang-out under-world" [I hear 'underground'.]
  • (7:54) "rotogravure sections constantly." [I hear 'stations']
  • (9:01) "costs about a dollar and a quarter each." [I don't hear 'about']
I could probably make the edits at 3:18 and 9:01 myself since there are other places in your recording where you say "underworld" and "about", but the inflection might be off, so I think it best that you make those edits unless you are comfortable with me messing with your work. The edit at 7:54 really needs to be made by you - I don't know how many people are old enough to remember the "roto" sections in Sunday newspapers (I do) and I just think that the 'seniors' (like me) would think it odd that a newsman like Joyce would say "stations instead of sections".

When you upload your revision be sure to use the same filename: goldkiller_joyce_1.mp3

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Thanks.

Thanks for the compliment. It's my first time doing something like this, so I'm glad I have something to offer the project. I hope to do more DRs in the future.

As for the edits, I agree that it's better to re-record to get the inflection right. I'll fix those sections tomorrow (the timestamps are super helpful!).

All PLOK and thank you for them! So, when you say you've never done anything like this before I find that hard to believe. You did a really good job of establishing Joyce's character and keeping faithful to it throughout the various situations he found himself in. By the time I got to "Get away!" in Part 5 I thought to myself: "That's so Joyce!". Nicely done!

May I please read for Sally?

Though if you think another part is more fitting/needed I'm alright with that.

Your Sally is perfect! Do you know her? Or just someone very much like her? Great job Sabrina. I don't know how much acting you've done. But I believe you either a professional or a "natch".

Sally is PLOK. Don't change a thing. I should point out - really, I should have pointed out when you claimed her - that the filename should have been something along the lines of: goldkiller_sally_5.mp3. I'm just pointing that out for future DR's and plays that you do for LV and I hope you'll do many of those because you are definitely talented.

Thank you for Sally, Sabrina. She's iconic, as I see it, and you are a star in the making.

I believe you could do another role, if you've a mind to, that is. I'd like to hear your take on Adele.

But if you'd like to give Julie or Alice a go instead I'd be supportive.

There's no rule against doubling up so long as they are not major roles that might confuse the listener. I don't think that listeners "lock in" on the voices of minor roles. Of course if you do "vocal impressions" that's cool too. How's your French girl speaks American sound (Anne's maid, Julie)?

Thank you. I don't think of Bobby as a fool. I think of him as a good friend to have. But maybe that's because I identify more with Bobby than I do with Tom. Yes, Bobby, needles Tom and that can get on Tom's nerves at times. I'm sure I do a little too much needling of my friends too. Then they tell me to back off and that's fine with me because when it comes down to it I want to be a good friend to them.

I was using “fool” in the classical sense: someone who actually wisely cajoles the ruler/main character to action with needling inanities.

Thanks, Todd
