The Ballad of the White Horse by G.K. Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) .

This project is now complete! All audio files can be found on our catalog page: https://librivox.org/the-ballad-of-the-white-horse-version-2-by-g-k-chesterton/
The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G K Chesterton about the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great, published in 1911. Written in ballad form, the work is usually considered an epic poem. The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's militaristic and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory. Chesterton incorporates a significant amount of philosophy into the basic structure of the story. (Introduction by Wikipedia)
  • Target completion date: August.5.2011
  • Text source (only read from this text!): http://www.gutenberg.org/files/1719/1719-h/1719-h.htm
  • Type of proof-listening required : Standard

IMPORTANT - soloist, please note: in order to limit the amount of languishing projects (and hence the amount of files on our hard-pressed server), we ask that you post an update at least once a month in your project thread, even if you haven't managed to record anything. If we don't hear from you for three months, your project will be opened up to a group project as soon as a Book Coordinator can be found. Files you have completed will be used in this project. If you haven't recorded anything yet, your project will be removed from the forum (contact any admin to have it re-instated).

I hope that I have filled out this form-thing correctly I have never had to do one yet, so if it needs fixing let me know. :)

Also in regards to the target completion date, I really expect to have it done sooner rather than later and perhaps the completion date doesn't need to be that far ahead. Does any one reading this have any suggestions/comments/opinion on whether or not August.5.2011 seems to be a reasonable date?

Hi Gayle!

The date totally depends on how soon you can upload your recordings. If you're someone who records regularly and uploads like, say, at least one a week or so, then you'll be way ahead. That being said, it's always good to add something like a buffer to the target date. You know, unforeseen circumstances - common cold, noisy neighbors, noisy neighbors' dogs, etc (ask me, I'd know ). I've seen a lot of soloists put in a target date months away and finish the project less than a month. :)
I'll MC this for you. Be right back with the MW. :)

Thank you!

So I could in theory start recording, etc. as soon as there is a magic window, or have I forgotten something I need to do first? (because so far this solo business seems to be much less complicated than I had expected it too be)

Gayle,

The MW's up! :)
It's not complicated at all. Have you ever handled an MW before? I'll send you a PM with lots of helpful hints. :)
All you have to do is record as usual, and upload to my folder, and manage the MW.

Gayle, I've sent you a PM. If you need anything else, let me know.
Good luck with your solo! Happy recording. :)
Let's hang around here for a couple days and see if we can get a PL/DPL.

It hasn't been complicated so far (That's why I thought I must be forgetting something :P )

I have not managed a MW before. Helpful hints sound like a good thing to have, I'll go read them next. :D

Thanks (again)

I meant to submit this before, but I've been part of a community play and so have been rather distracted of late...

Section 1 is PL OK!
Just a note for going forward, there were several clicking noises throughout the recording. They weren't annoying enough for me to note them for you to edit out, but just wanted to let you know.
Good work, Gayle!
